Past Years: 2002

King of the Mountain 2002: Timothy Sweeney
Timothy Sweeney (Tim / Timbo) was top at the ranking 2002 with 9 finished games. He had soloed in 4 games and drawn in 5 games. With other words: He was still unbeaten! Tim had 22.49 EP at the end of 2001 and he had increased that score to 41.97 EP in 2002. This means that he got around 20 EPs in 2002. He seems to be untouchable and he had 4.66 EP as average score per game. He is (of course) the favourite to be at the top next year too. He was more than 16 points ahead of 2nd place at the end of 2002.

At 2nd place we find Guy Fraser-Sampson with 25.52 EP and 7 finished games. He had 3 solos, 3 draws and only 1 loss, and he might, just might, challenge Timothy Sweeney for 1st spot next year. Steve Turner fell down from 2nd to 3rd place in 2002. He had 2 solos and 5 draws in 9 games. Walter de Oude was on 4th place in 2001 and he got 4th place in 2002 too. Ken Marten jumped from 18th place in 2001 to 5th place in 2002. Donald Forrester climbed from 15th to 6th place. At 7th to 10th place we find Paul Simpkins, Kester Bearne, Andy Taylor and Sandor Marton. The two players who have got the prizes for Most Valuable Victory, Lee Simpson and Cies de Theije, were at 11th and 24th place. Richard Hucknall got 3rd place in 2001, but he fell down to 12th place in 2002.

Runner of the Year: Timothy Sweeney
Timothy Sweeney was top of the ranking 2001, and he was still top of the ranking at the end of 2002. It is very impressive that the one who was in the lead one year ago, got more EPs than any other players at the site in 2002. Timothy Sweeney got 21.33 EPs in 2002. This is absolutely stunning. Everyone knows about his skills, but he scores best of all anyway. Guy Fraser-Sampson got 2nd place with 19.08 EPs and Ken Marten got 3rd place with 15.08 EPs in 2002.

Most Valuable Victory: Lee Simpson
He got the title for his impressive victory in Deimos. It is the most valuable victory ever so far, 10.75 EP (Even more than Good as Gold since the rules for gamescores has changed somewhat since 2001). Lee Simpson is also one of two players in the world that have won the e-mail World Championship in Diplomacy. Lee Simpson might even challenge Tim Sweeney at the top of the rating when he has finished more games here.

Rookie of the Year: Don Hawkes
Don Hawkes got this title for his great victory in Mule. He was unlucky to not be Player of the Month in July 2002, but he got this title instead, for his Solo worth 7.50 EP in his first game here.

Players of the Month
January: Tom Craig (Solo in GM Game)
February: Donald Forrester (Solo in Maverick)
March: Andy Taylor (Solo in Old English Sheepdog)
April: Simon Berry (Solo in Vizsla)
May: Ken Marten (Solo in Solstice)

August: Nick Gibbons (Solo in I Would Stay)
September: Jeff Grzybowski (Solo in Dwarf Gourami)
October: Simon Wilcock (Solo in Perfect 10)
November: Lee Simpson (Solo in Deimos)

Some statistics for games finished in 2002

98 games finished in 2002. The number of games finished each year is increasing. The first 3 years 110 games finished in total and in 2002, the 4th year, almost 100 games finished.

Country-ranking
Below is the ranking for the 7 nations. 100 points is average, that is, a country with 100 points has 1/7-part of all Eagle Points given. 140 means 40 pct. more than average, and 75 means 25 pct. below average.

1) 122.09 Russia
2) 119.26 France
3) 118.09 Germany
4) 99.49 Austria
5) 90.05 Italy
6) 76.74 England
7) 74.29 Turkey

Russia won this year too, but the Russian dominance has gone. France and Germany have both had almost as good results as Russia. Austria climbed from 7th to 4th place, and Austria was an average country to play in 2002. Italy and England have been weak countries in 2002. Turkey seems to be a very weak country since 6th place in 1999-2001 and 7th place in 2002 is really bad.

Anarchies
There have been 1.46 dropouts pr. game in 2002. This average is 0.40 lower than 1999-2001, which is a very positive sign that the number of anarchies seems to be dropping.

Solos and draws
38 games have ended with a solo (38.8 pct.), 60 have ended with a draw (61.2 pct.). The draws are distributed like this:

2-way: 17 pct.
3-way: 42 pct.
4-way: 22 pct.
5-way: 18 pct.
6-way: 02 pct.
7-way: No games

The number of solos are dropping, which is a sign that the players are getting better (solos should be somewhat rare if all 7 are good players). The number of 3-way-draws has also been dropping since 1999-2001, while the number of 5-way-draws has increased a lot. 2-way-draws have been constant between 15 and 20 pct.

Solo-table
The distribution of solo and Eagle Points awarded from solo as average in 2002, is this:

1) 11 Russia
2) 08 Germany
3) 07 France
4) 06 Austria
5) 03 Italy
6) 02 Turkey
7) 01 England

The most surprising fact is that England had only 1 solo in 2002. Italy’s 3 solos and Turkey’s 2 solos were weak too. Russia was at the top in 2002, just as in 1999-2001.

Eliminations
Here is the elimination-table (not counting elimination after anarchy). The formula is, for each country: Elimination/(eliminations+survivals+draws+solos):

1) 22 pct. France
2) 27 pct. England
3) 27 pct. Italy
4) 31 pct. Russia
5) 35 pct. Germany
6) 39 pct. Turkey
7) 41 pct. Austria

France was the best country to play if your goal is to not be eliminated in the game. England jumped from 6th to 2nd place on the table in 2002, so England seems to be a good choice too. Turkey fell down to 6th place, and Austria is “naturally” on the last spot.

Players` results overall

20.8 pct. Anarchy
25.1 pct. Elimination
18.2 pct. Survival
30.3 pct. Part of a draw
05.5 pct. Solo

The number of anarchies dropped several points, while the number of eliminations increased some points in 2002 (compared to 1999-2001). The number of survivals dropped a lot. The soloists are getting rarer, while the number of players with draws have increased a lot. More than 30 pct. of all results were draws in 2002.
